Why Was Mayberry Comparison Allowed?

by Ryan Shell on June 11, 2009

You may or may not know this, but the City Council has hired a consultant to help find Greensboro’s next City Manager. Colin Baenziger is his name and the original job ad he created stated the following,

“But what is the real reason to live in Greensboro? That is easy – it is all the people who live here. Although the third largest city in the state, its residents affectionately characterize it as having a Mayberry mindset.”

Members of the council were apparently taken back by the Mayberry comparison, and rightfully so. My first thought when reading the comment is that of Andy Griffith walking through Mayberry with Opie. Not exactly the same vision I have when walking down Elm Street. Anyway, that isn’t what this post is about.

Why was the ad not reviewed by the council prior to it being posted? That seems like a given in my eyes.

BAD human resources practice. REALLY bad. Especially when you are consulting!

I presume they are hiring a PR consultant for new branding now, right?

Mayberry? whoda thunk.

As a person that works in public relations and marketing, I think you bring up a good point. Greensboro could use a little image upgrade – something that I think I could really help with.
