Staff Indicates Recycling Pilot Program was Successful

by Ryan Shell on July 21, 2009

I wanted to take a moment and elaborate a bit on yesterdays post about recycling. Item 28 on tonight’s council agenda has to do with a recycling pilot program that was launched in November 2008.

Here is some info the council has received in their packet for this agenda item,

“In November 2008, the City of Greensboro’s Field Operations Department launched a 90 day recycling pilot program at five multifamily locations in which we provided recycling cards and signage to help increase participation, reduce contamination, and educate the communities. The five sample complexes included one with college age residents (which lost its dumpster recycling program due to frequent contamination), a low to moderate income complex, an over 55 community, and two owner occupied town home developments. The results of this pilot showed an increase in participation and recycling tons and a decrease in contamination. Field Operations plans to continue with these efforts by offering this program to other multifamily units (apartment complexes) with additional funding for the following: 1) rolling carts to collect recyclable materials and 2) Informational signage on recycling dumpsters for our current commercial recycling customers, new customers, or for any dumpsters that are replaced.”

I’m happy to read that this pilot resulted in more participation and less contamination and that the staff is suggesting we continue making forward progress. Per my post yesterday we can still take this one step further in the near future,

“At a minimum, in the near future, I would like to see the council take action to require that recycling be offered at all new multifamily developments.”
