Sidewalk Concerns Raised for District 2

by Ryan Shell on May 13, 2009

In a very short amount of time a vast amount of information was shared at last Saturday’s Greensboro Neighborhood Congress budget meeting. One of the issues raised is that some districts, especially District 2, seem to get left out of various projects taking place citywide or that certain needs aren’t being met. One item that was specifically referenced was the need for more sidewalks.

I knew that the council approved for a large amount of sidewalks to be built at last Tuesday’s meeting, but to get further detail I reached out to Adam Fischer with the City of Greensboro. His title has changed recently, but I believe his formal title at this point is the Acting Transportation Director.

From the information he sent I gathered that 33 miles of sidewalk will be under construction within the next two years. Here’s how the number of projects in each district breaks down:

District 1 = 16
District 2 = 7
District 3 = 13
District 4 = 10
District 5 = 4

At first glance the numbers looked a bit off to me, but keep in mind these are the total number of projects. Here is how the total number of miles of new sidewalk breaks down for each district:

District 1 = 8.13 miles
District 2 = 8.39 miles
District 3 = 6.59 miles
District 4 = 7.19 miles
District 5 = 2.95 miles

When looking at the numbers by the mileage break down it does appear that District 2 is well represented with this project.

Another concern that was raised was that sidewalks are frequently put on the side of the road that has less foot traffic making them seem like a waste. That’s something the city should continue to pay attention to in an effort to ensure funds aren’t being wasted… by putting a sidewalk on the wrong side of the road.

Update: I thought it would be helpful to list the locations of the sidewalk projects listed for District 2.

Ryan,
While there seems to be equity in distribution my concern is more about priority in the most walkable areas, and if those areas are considered when compiling lists.

Nettie,

I agree with you on that front 100%.

“Headquarters Dr. to Holt Ave. South Side Only” What street is this on? Headquarters and Holt don’t intersect.

“Tucker St. to Penry Rd. – Both Sides – Replace any non-compliant ADA wheel chair ramps” Same question?

It’s really hard to make sense of this.

Billy,

I just added a little more information. Hope that helps.
