Greensboro, N.C. (July 28, 2009) – Ryan Shell, a member of Greensboro’s Board of Adjustments and a City Council At-Large candidate, took the first step yesterday and requested that City staff look into the logistics of changing the Board’s meeting time from 2 pm to 5:30 pm.
“I was actually shocked when I asked a longtime board member if the meeting time had ever been discussed and he said no,” said Shell. “I don’t care what kind of job you have, but taking off at 2 pm on a Monday afternoon can be pretty difficult and I think it poses two problems: it reduces the number of applicants that might be able to serve on the Board and it makes it harder for citizens to attend the hearings, which is something I see as a pretty big issue.”
If all goes as planned the Board of Adjustments will likely vote on the time change at their next scheduled meeting which will be held on August 24, at 2 pm in the Council Chambers.
“Changing the meeting time is a positive step for this Board, but there are many others that also need to be looked at,” said Shell. “In addition, I’ve also outlined several changes that I think need to happen in regards to the appointment process. The council needs more information on the people they are looking to appoint as well as those currently serving on the Board or Commission they are appointing someone too. Equal representation is something that I think is very important and by having additional information we can get one step closer to achieving that goal.”
