The following is from a series the Greensboro News & Record is running called “Meet the Candidate.”

Meet the candidate: Ryan Shell, at-large

Ryan Shell’s campaign is a little bit old school and a little bit new school.

He’s gotten his name out there through his blog, GreensboroPolitics.com. But when it comes to making his mark in a crowded field in the City Council at-large race, Shell’s going door-to-door to meet voters.

“I want to hit 25,000 doors,” Shell said at a recently Saturday gathering of his campaign volunteers.

Shell is a former radio DJ and current public relations professional working for a credit union.

He works hard professionally and through his volunteer work in Greensboro — and he’ll do the same if he is elected, Shell said.

“I am a very good listener. I am a very good communicator,” Shell said. “I would like to collaborate to meet a common goal.”

Shell promotes himself as a leader who can get things done. He’s helped some Willow Oaks neighbors whose homes were flooding. He picks up trash on neighborhood streets. He created a network that links together community watch groups to share information.

When other city leaders were urged to not go to a neighborhood where a teenager was shot to death, Shell went to visit the grieving mother. (So did current council members Yvonne Johnson and Trudy Wade.)

“There is nothing that will keep me away (from a part of Greensboro),” Shell said.
