CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE WANTS NOISE ORDINANCE
TO INCLUDE DOWNTOWN GREENSBORO
Greensboro, N.C. (July 31, 2009) – Ryan Shell, a candidate for Greensboro City Council At-Large wants the City of Greensboro to modify (or create a noise ordinance specifically for downtown) the citywide noise ordinance so that downtown Greensboro is included.
“By exempting downtown we are negatively impacting the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) and those that live downtown,” said Shell. “For instance, a resident had to call the GPD because a business had extremely loud music playing outside. The police came, told them to turn it down… and 10 minutes later it was cranked back up. The resident called the police again and they simply said there was nothing else they could do because downtown is exempt from the noise ordinance.”
The Greensboro noise ordinance can be read in full by visiting Municode.com. The exemption currently reads, “(l) Noises in the downtown business district from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 a.m. the following day are exempt from the provisions of section 18-50 of this article, but not from the provisions of sections 18-48 and 49.” Section 18-50 includes things such as blowing horns, personal radios and sound-producing equipment in vehicles.
“I’ve lived in downtown for just over four years and think it’s a wonderful place to call home, to eat and to visit with friends,” said Shell. “I have absolutely no problem working with a mix of residents, downtown business owners and any other group to revamp the current ordinance. It’s also understood that places like the baseball stadium and Center City Park will need to have special exceptions.”
