CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE WANTS RECYCLING TO BE MANDATORY
Ryan Shell Wants it to be Mandatory that Recycling is Offered at Apartment Complexes
Greensboro, N.C. (June 16, 2009) – Ryan Shell, a candidate for the District 2 Greensboro City Council seat, is advocating for the City of Greensboro to require that recycling services be offered at all apartment complexes.
“We live in a world where people are very much proactive about recycling,” said Shell. “Given the fact that the word green is in our city’s name I would hope that we could make every attempt possible to be an environmentally friendly city. It almost seems wrong to have one of the greenest hotels in the United States (Proximity) in Greensboro, yet we don’t require recycling to be readily available to all citizens. We need to fix that.”
Not only would this be a step towards making Greensboro a greener city, it would also reduce the amount of recyclable waste we dump into the landfill.
“Imagine the number of people that move in and out of apartment complexes over the course of a year in Greensboro,” said Shell. “When people move they typically put their belongings in cardboard boxes, and if there’s no where to recycle those boxes they simply get mixed in with all of the other waste. To my understanding, the City’s legal department has stated that the only thing needed to make this happen is for the City Council to make it an ordinance. It’s time that we stepped up to the plate and made this happen. Not only would this reduce the amount of trash we dump in a landfill, but it would potentially set us up to earn additional revenue in the future. I know revenue stemming from recycling is down at the moment due to the economy, but it is imperative that we plan for the future and be poised to generate revenue when the market turns around.”
In addition to wanting the ordinance to require recycling to be offered at apartment complexes, Shell also wants clear guidelines for the size of the recycling containers.
“I’ve seen instances where one or two small recycling containers have been provided for hundreds or residents – that simply doesn’t cut it.”

As a professional in the recycling industry, this is a great idea. Yes, revenue is DOWN, but its not “non-existant” – and I’d think creating a revenue stream is always more beneficial than creating a cost stream.
I’m moving into a new condo at the end of the month, and I”m hoping recycling is alive and well there… if not, I’ll be trying to do something about that. I just can’t stand to pitch something in the trash, when it can be reused or recycled. Anyone need boxes?
