COUNCIL CANDIDATE ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Ryan Shell Will Give Away Five $1,000 Scholarships to District 2 Youth
Greensboro, N.C. (July 09, 2009) – Ryan Shell, a candidate for the District 2 Greensboro City Council seat, has announced that he intends to donate $5,000 of his annual council pay to fund five $1,000 scholarships for District 2 youth.
“I know these scholarships will only put a dent in the cost of a child’s college education, but during these tough economic times any little bit helps,” said Shell. “While I intend to have an impact on District 2, and the city as a whole, it is also very important for me to do something that directly impacts our youth. They are the leaders of tomorrow and I want them to know that I care about their future.”
Should Shell be elected the first scholarships will be given out in 2010.

If this is well thought out and all the lawyers smile on the process, this has the earmark of a good idea(tm). As for value, it pays a LOT of the cost of a semester/year at GTCC. Can you add some specifics, like residence requirements, college requirement, trade school, qualifications (maybe GPA) and related? I don’t see ipso facto quid pro quo but specifics are always welcome. (always wanted to use as much Latin as possible in a single sentence)
I haven’t heard of anyone ’round here doing something like this. Do you have a model somewhere we could look at?
Sue,
Your point about cost is well taken and exactly why I said, “I know these scholarships will only put a dent in the cost of a child’s college education, but during these tough economic times any little bit helps.” I have friends that are trying to put their kids through college and have seen the struggles they are going through. If their kids had the chance to pick up an additional $1,000 somewhere along the line they would be extremely appreciative.
We do a pretty sizeable scholarship program where I work and I’ve been fortunate enough to take part in various aspects of the program. I have someone that will help me fully develop the scholarship, and ideally I’d like to make the fund larger if at all possible. Recipients will have to live in D2, but I have no anticipation of putting a limitation on the school. There will be, for lack of better terms, a grading scale that gives a value to various items and that is how winners will be chosen.
I’ve not heard of anyone doing something like this around here or anywhere else – it’s just something I decided I wanted to do.
Ryan
