Apartment Recycling Ordinance Idea is Moving Along

One week ago today I started an initiative to potentially create an ordinance that would require recycling to be offered at all apartment complexes in Greensboro. Since this initiative was launched I have received a good number of positive responses from residents, as well as individuals working in the apartment industry, and individuals that are running for other council districts. I have also reached out to the Triad Apartment Association in an effort to take note of any concerns that they may have.  By doing this up front we might be able to knock out any concerns that those in the apartment industry may have. Collaboration is key.

To my understanding the City is planning to take a look at the communities that are currently participating in their pilot for multifamily recycling. They will also do research on other communities that have this practice in place, look at cost options, and service options. In addition, they will also be coordinating with private collection companies that provide services to multifamily/apartment complexes. This information should make it before the Greensboro City Council during a work session on August 25th.

I’m very interested in the findings of this research and whether or not this is feasible to do in the immediate future. Regardless, I think this is something the City should strive to accomplish and that it should be a priority.

If for some reason the idea is not cost efficient for our current structure, that should not be a measuring stick for whether or not it is worthwhile to throw out new ideas. New ideas and vision seems to be something Greensboro is lacking and a void I hope to fill. I know that from a professional standpoint not all ideas come to fruition, but if you don’t ever brainstorm and start the conversation… you never do anything outside the box.
